How Kerala programs are built
Kerala runs on a different rhythm to the northern circuits — shorter driving days, more nights in one place, and a landscape sequence that moves from coast to hills to backwaters. The standard build enters at Kochi, climbs to the Munnar tea estates, crosses to Thekkady for the spice-and-wildlife leg, then drops to Alleppey for a houseboat night before finishing on the coast. It is also the one Indian circuit with a real monsoon season case, because Ayurveda programs are traditionally timed to the rains.
What the circuit is built around
- Overnight houseboat on the Vembanad backwaters
- Munnar tea estates and plantation stays
- Periyar reserve at Thekkady
- Fort Kochi's colonial quarter and Kathakali performances
- Ayurveda programs timed to the monsoon months

Questions agents ask about Kerala
Is Kerala worth selling during the monsoon?
For the right client, yes. Sightseeing is compromised and backwater cruising is less pleasant, but Ayurveda treatment is traditionally timed to the rains and properties price accordingly. It is a genuine wellness proposition rather than a discounted sightseeing one, and should be sold that way.
How many houseboat nights should an itinerary carry?
One. The experience is strong on the first evening and the first morning, and most clients are ready to move by the second day. Programs that hold two nights on the water usually do it for pricing reasons rather than client benefit.
Does Kerala combine with the northern circuits?
It does, but only with a domestic flight — the two are at opposite ends of the country. A common long program runs the Golden Triangle first, then flies Delhi to Kochi for the Kerala leg. Budget a full transit day for the connection.
Combine it with the rest of India
Most programs run more than one circuit. These pair naturally with the one above.
